The rifle I am using for inspiration is #81 shown in RCA vol 1. It is maple stocked but the patch box and carving are very similar to the mahogany stocked rifles. Isaac Haines was arguably the best carver of all the great long rifle makers. My small tree critters have always been dropped with a .32 or .36, and they excel on small game. With a .40 all shots need to be at the head/neck area even with very light loads. Mid-body hits might be okay, you'll just have to see. What John Gemmer built was based on the architecture of the S. Hawken Plains and California rifles of the late 1860's. Using the S. Hawken plans as a guide to the parts you will have in the Investarms Gemmer kit is a good basis. I have seen one Gemmer Rifle.They shoot most accuretly if the clearance is .003 or less. That's a pretty snug fit and can be pretty hard to load in a fouled bore. The original Minie' bullet to bore fit could be all over the map and it was usually rather loose so accuracy suffered and for the most part the military didn't care. That will expedite the process by about 10X.The short barrel like 20 or 22 inches is cute but has lots of short comings in muzzle loaders. The old timers sorted out how long a barrel needed to be and as powder got better the barrel got shorter. They all arrived within a four day period and, damn, this is one happy boy here. The reason I'm bothering you on this frosty fall morning is my utter amazement at the Trade Rifle.Powder charge. Nitro (hard) card. Shotload. Thin overshot card. Full fiber cushion wad*. *The cushion wad needs to be SATURATED (the wetter and heavier, the better) with oil. I like to use olive oil. My first muzzleloader ever (bought in 1977) was a Charles Daly (Investarms) .54 Hawken, still have it, still shoots great. Added several more since then, never have had a problem or breakage. The lands are "52", the grooves are "54" and is a "56" caliber rim with a smaller base to tie your cartridge to. I had a 54 in 1-66 and it shot great, but it didn't start to get there until you were loading north of 100 grains of powder. Was still showing signs of improvement up to 135 grains, but my crowns and fillings were starting to loosen. I have had one for years in 54 caliber, which has a 1-65 twist barrel. Mine shoots a patched round ball OR a Hornady GP conical very accurately.A key to the formula is to draw a line along the comb and it should pass right through the tumbler screw for the flint cock and just under the pan. The Tennessee is .50 caliber percussion but the rifle comes with a new L&R Flintlock and would just need a vent hole amd me to convert it.
