They thought of them as the Scourge and worked to eradicate them. Then came Sylvanas who worked with Garithos and Varimathras to reclaim Lordaeron. She later enslaved Varimathras and killed Garithos (the racist). The Horde accepted them.The Titans knew about Argus and abandoned him when the legion came in and corrupted the planet. Hence the Titan architecture. They started to order Argus and nurture him but got pulled away and then killed by Sargeras before they could return. The world spirit in Argus was not up to par with the others and they abandoned him to fate.

Essentially, there were fairly strict gender divides in night elf society up until WC3. However, post Warcraft 3 (wow classic), this started to change and it became much more accepted for women to become druids and men to become warriors and priests.
